Preparing the Soil for Planting

Every day, a class of 50 or more students, work with us to prepare the land for seeding. The first step is to dig the trenches. This can be hard work to remove all of the plants (weeds!). Then we fill each trench with dry leaves, and start a fire. This layer of ash is important to provide a good environment for the seeds to grow. We will next add a layer of manure. I am so proud of these kids, they work hard with a smile on their faces!
